LONDON x PARIS

Graphic Art, Personal project

PERSONAL PROJECT

Initially, the theme was to elaborate a visual comparison between Paris and London through their scale, space, articulation and use of the space as well as the different lifestyle rhythms…

Book – photography & screen print – 410 x 140 mm

Paris's architecture is very compact and homogeneous, responding to the criteria of Baron Haussmann, who reconstructed the city in 1860 at Napoleon III’s request for political reasons. The city is strictly limited by a “péripherique” (road belt surrounding Paris).

London is more scattered and irregular, blurry about its borders. It seems in constant evolution, almost accidental, and gives the feeling of constantly recreating itself through decades, thus exceeding successive academicism.

This project is a subjective vision of the two cities' space and scale I lived in.

It seems that urbanism and architecture reveal differences in mentalities; Paris seems really devoted to its traditional academism, while London tends to evoke a feeling of experimentation, which is related to freedom.

The final piece, the book, is not about comparison but juxtaposition: Paris or London? I cannot choose but only set the two of them side by side, which translates to a personal experience of living here while coming from there.

Personal photographs of Paris and London were used to create two layers per page (the London layer in landscape format and the Paris one in portrait), and this juxtaposition creates a fusion. The book can be looked at in a portrait or landscape format.
